Guest: Jorge Espada, Physiotherapist in Sotogrande and Gibraltar.
Recovering from an injury is never just physical. It’s emotional, mental, and deeply personal. After my recent knee replacement, I’ve learned that the real transformation happens not in the operating theatre, but in the weeks that follow, and in the hands of the people guiding you through it.
One of those people is Jorge Espada, physiotherapist in Sotogrande and Gibraltar, and someone whose approach blends science, technology and humanity in a way that feels uniquely right for this community.
What We See Every Day: Sport, Ageing and New Technology
Jorge has spent more than two decades working with residents of Sotogrande and Gibraltar. His own childhood was full of injuries from football, rugby, basketball and water sports, which now helps him explain pain and progression in a way patients immediately understand. Communication, for him, is part of the treatment.
Physiotherapy today looks nothing like it did in the 1970s and 1980s. Back then, recovery meant cream, massage and stretching. Now, every room in Jorge’s clinic has different equipment:
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound to see inflammation, fluid and tissue damage in real time
- Ultrasound‑guided techniques for precise treatment
- AI‑enhanced diagnostics that speed up MRI and spine scans
The first time he scanned my knee, I joked that it felt like a baby ultrasound , but the clarity was extraordinary.
We also discussed advanced surgery: custom 3D‑printed knee prostheses, designed from CT scans and printed in Switzerland to match your anatomy exactly. This improves accuracy, reduces complications and accelerates recovery.
Preparation matters too. Strengthening the leg before surgery, understanding the exercises and entering the operation in good condition makes everything faster afterwards.
Sotogrande’s Lifestyle and the Psychology of Recovery
Sotogrande is movement. Golf, padel, tennis, polo, football academies, water sports, and yes, Jorge sees injuries from all of them.
Golf brings back and knee issues. Polo brings muscle strains. Racket sports bring elbow and shoulder problems. Children grow too fast and need guidance.
But the sport with the most injuries today? Padel. Social, fun, addictive and full of rallies that twist the body in every direction.
Pickleball is arriving too, adding another layer to the mix.
Many of Jorge’s patients aren’t injured at all. They come for mobility assessments, spine development for children, pelvic floor therapy, age‑related mobility or simply prevention. Physiotherapy becomes part of maintaining an active lifestyle, not just repairing it.
Recovery is also psychological. Before my surgery, I worried about driving, working, playing golf, and simply returning to normal life. Jorge sees this every day. Recovery is not linear, some days go sideways before they go forward. Weekly scans help patients see real progress and stay motivated.
The first two weeks after surgery are crucial: safe mobility, controlled range of motion, gentle walking, avoiding long periods of standing. After the stitches come out, mobility improves quickly. By four weeks, most patients feel 50% better. By eight weeks, around 80%. By three months, almost fully recovered.
What It Means for Residents of Sotogrande
Speaking with Jorge made something clear: recovery is not just about healing a joint, it’s about regaining confidence, rhythm and independence. Sotogrande is the perfect environment for that: good weather, space to move, sport everywhere, and professionals who understand both the physical and emotional sides of injury.
Jorge works in San Roque, San Martín del Tesorillo and Gibraltar. His team, Ruben, Andrea, Carla and Ethan, keeps everything running smoothly. Appointments are organised with precision, reminders arrive automatically, and if you knock on the door, someone will help you.
I know this personally. They’ve helped me walk again, move again and feel like myself again.
