Family Experiences, Events & Tourism in Sotogrande with Rafael Calvo

Guest: Rafael Calvo of Ikebana Eventos and Jugarnia Nautic

I recently sat down with Rafael Calvo, CFO of Ikebana Events, a company with more than 30 years of experience producing corporate, government and private events. Rafael has a rather international story himself: born in Moscow to a Peruvian mother, raised partly in Spain and Miami, educated in Gibraltar and now dividing his time between Madrid and Sotogrande. What brought his family here originally was work. What made them stay was something else entirely.

Their first project in Sotogrande came in 2015, when the company created a children’s theme park near the entrance to the port. They rented locally at first, eventually bought a home and, like many people who arrive here almost accidentally, discovered that Sotogrande becomes much more interesting once you understand how to live in it.

Why Sotogrande Events Are About More Than Entertainment

Rafael’s background is in finance, but he started in the company from the bottom, working directly on events before moving into the financial side. That matters because modern event management is no longer simply about organising a party. Companies increasingly want experiences that strengthen teams, create stronger relationships and give people something they remember afterwards.

That could mean a corporate event in Madrid, a private family day or taking a team completely out of its routine. The objective is usually the same: people need to connect differently than they do sitting around a meeting table.

Sotogrande Canal Tours: Seeing the Resort From Another Perspective

One of the most interesting ideas Rafael’s family developed here came from their time living in Miami. They saw the canals in Sotogrande and immediately recognised the opportunity to create something similar to the pontoon boat experiences they had enjoyed there.

That became the Sotogrande Canal Tour. Today they operate five boats, taking visitors through the canals, explaining some of Sotogrande’s history and allowing people to experience the marina and surrounding area from the water.

It is a simple concept, but I think it says something important about Sotogrande tourism. People do not necessarily need enormous attractions. Sometimes what they want is a better way to experience what is already here.

Sotogrande Is Becoming Less Seasonal

Rafael also sees something we have discussed many times on the podcast: Sotogrande is still very different in August compared with winter, but the shoulder seasons are becoming much more active.

September and October now attract people who deliberately avoid the busiest summer weeks. They already know the area, they want better weather without the crowds and they are looking for activities, restaurants and experiences while they are here.

That is an important shift for the Sotogrande lifestyle because year-round demand creates better businesses, and better businesses make year-round living more attractive.

What Sotogrande Still Needs for Families

I finished by asking Rafael what he thinks Sotogrande is still missing, and his answer took us back to where his story here began.

More dedicated spaces for children and families. The old park attracted families not only from Sotogrande, but from Gibraltar, Alcaidesa and the surrounding areas. Today there are plenty of excellent services here, but comparatively few places specifically designed around families spending time together.

When I asked Rafael to describe Sotogrande in one word, his answer was simple: unique. The challenge now is making sure we keep adding to that uniqueness rather than simply adding more of the same.
